How Scented Dog Toys Enrich the Lives of Blind or Vision-Impaired Dogs

While humans experience the world primarily through sight, dogs rely on their extraordinary sense of smell—especially when their vision is limited or lost. A dog’s sense of smell is exponentially times more sensitive than a human’s. They use their sense of smell to navigate, understand, and enjoy the world. According to a July, 2022 article by Caitlin Hayes in the Cornell Chronicle entitled “Study finds new links between dogs’ smell and vision,” Cornell researches actually documented “that dogs’ sense of smell is integrated with their vision and other unique parts of the brain, shedding new light on how dogs experience and navigate the world.” (The study is fascinating—read more about it in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Why do dogs go blind?

According to the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance out of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, there are many eye disorders that affect dogs, including:

  • cataracts – a film over the lens of the eye, often associated with diabetes
  • glaucoma – increased pressure in the eye which can build up fluid and damage the optic nerve,
  • progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) - an inherited disease of the retina that starts with night blindness,
  • suddenly acquired retinal degeneration (SARDS) – retina disease that causes blindness quickly

For blind dogs, scent is not just helpful—it’s essential. A lightly scented toy can act like a homing beacon, guiding them to their dog bed, toy basket, or simply something familiar to them.

5 Benefits of Scented Toys for Blind or Vision-Impaired Dogs

  1. Encourages Active Play

Scented toys give blind dogs a target to seek out, stimulating natural hunting and chasing instincts. A recognizable scent invites interaction. Some dog toys have scents like bacon or pork sausage, but those aren’t so pleasurable to humans. At Project Hive, we offer dog toys in five people-pleasing aromas (all inspired by plants that feed or need bees for pollination): lavender, vanilla, berry, mango, and coconut.

  2. Builds Confidence

When a blind dog can successfully find and engage with a toy, it boosts confidence. It helps them feel more in control of their environment, reducing anxiety and promoting independence.

  3. Enhances Mental Stimulation

Searching for a scented toy activates a dog’s brain in ways visual tracking can't. This type of scent-based problem-solving keeps the mind sharp and boredom at bay.
  4. Strengthens the Bond

Playing scent-based games—like hiding a toy around the house or yard—creates a unique way for pet parents and their dogs to connect, communicate, and enjoy time together.
  5. Makes Toys More Distinct

In multi-pet households, adding scent to toys can help blind dogs differentiate between items. A favorite ball or chew toy becomes more personal and easier to recognize.

Tips for Choosing the Right Scented Toy

  • Look for scents that you like too. After all, you’ll be hanging out with your dog! Why shouldn’t it be pleasant for both of you?
  • Start with familiar scents like lavender or vanilla and monitor how your dog reacts.
  • Avoid strong smells—dogs' noses are sensitive, and less is more.
  • Choose toys that are gentle on your dog’s teeth, so your dog has both scent and touch cues to enjoy without hurting his or her teeth or gums. Dogs love Project Hive’s Chew Toys to gnaw on; they gently massage dog’s gums!

Why Dog Toy Retailers Should Stock Scented Toys for Blind Dogs

If you’re a retailer reading this post, by stocking scented dog toys, you are supporting inclusive play—and expanding your customer base.

As a pet retailer, offering toys that go beyond the “one size fits all” approach can help set your store apart. One often-overlooked group in the pet community is dogs with visual impairments. Whether due to age, illness, or genetics, thousands of dogs across the U.S. experience partial or full blindness—and their needs matter.

Scent Is a Blind Dog’s Superpower

While a blind dog may not be able to follow a Fetch Stick with their eyes, they can track it by scent. Dogs navigate the world primarily through smell, and for those without sight, that sense becomes their strongest tool for interaction, comfort, and play.

Why Scented Toys Deserve a Spot on Your Shelves

  1. Meet a Real, Underserved Need
Visually impaired dogs are part of a growing demographic. Stocking scented toys shows empathy and inclusivity—and opens your doors to pet parents actively seeking enrichment solutions for special-needs pets.

  2. Set Yourself Apart From Big-Box Stores
Most mass retailers carry standard toys that rely on color, texture, or sound. Offering scent-based options shows you understand dogs on a deeper level—and keeps customers coming back for your expertise.

  3. Drive Higher Engagement
Scented toys appeal not just to blind dogs, but also to seniors, anxious pups, and scent-driven breeds. That’s a broad customer base for a single product category.

  4. Encourage Multi-Sensory Play
Toys that combine scent, texture, and durability add value and versatility. Many pet parents are looking for enrichment toys—especially for indoor or solo play.

  5. Tell a Story That Sells
Products with a purpose make an emotional connection. Highlighting how these toys help blind dogs play confidently is a compelling narrative—perfect for in-store signage, social media, and email campaigns. (And add to that story Project Hive’s mission to save the bees, and that the toys are all made in the USA, it gets pretty exciting!)

What to Look For When Stocking Scented Toys

  • Infused with scents that smell good to humans, like vanilla, berry, or lavender
  • Durable yet gentle on dogs’ teeth for strong chewers
  • Textured or ridged surfaces to enhance tactile feedback
  • Made in the USA to support American manufacturers
  • Recyclable to appeal to eco-conscious buyers

Retail Tip: Create an “Enrichment for All Abilities” section to spotlight products like scented toys, textured feeders, or slow bowls—along with gentle leashes and sensory games.

Bottom Line for Retailers

Offering toys for blind dogs isn't just compassionate—it’s smart retailing. Scented toys provide comfort, fun, and independence for dogs who need it most. By stocking them, you’re not just selling a product—you’re making play accessible for every pup.

Bottom Line for pet parents

Every dog deserves play, joy, and discovery—no matter their abilities. Scented toys open up a world of possibility for blind dogs, offering enrichment, empowerment, and pure tail-wagging fun. With just a little added scent, you’re not just giving them a toy—you’re giving them a way to connect with the world.
